Though this earthquake was strong, no one died. Many buildings were damaged. Strong earthquake in Athens is rare. This is due to the city being built on solid ground according to an expert. People were evacuated from museums and archeological sites as a precaution. Inspections by expert showed no significant damages on prominent historical sites like Acropolis Hill and museums, according to the Cultural Ministry. Earthquake with magnitude 5.9 occurred in 1999 and 143 people died. Many buildings were destroyed at that time.
